A councillor is calling for more affordable housing to be built in Mexborough after it was revealed more than 1700 people want a council house in the town.

David Holland is lobbying Doncaster Council to look into kick-starting a regeneration scheme to redevelop the Windhill Estate, that has stood derelict since funding for a previous housing scheme was cut several years ago.

This comes after figures revealed 1732 people out of 9555 people on a council house waiting list indicated Mexborough as their preferred area in which to live.

Coun Holland revealed the figures at a public meeting in Mexborough Resource Centre last Thursday.

He said: “The council has said that Mexborough’s council housing needs are being met but I think they were talking about private housing.

“Mexborough is a popular area. We will be pressing the council to make this area a priority for social housing, in particular the Windhill Estate.”

He added that the figures were revealed by Strata Homes, who manage the council’s housing stock, using the Freedom of Information Act.

A Doncaster Council spokesman said the authority’s asset and properties team had recently completed a site valuation at Windhill and the former estate is “currently awaiting further appraisal in terms of a preferred development route.”

He added there are five developments underway in Mexborough, involving hundreds of new homes.
