YOUNGSTERS at Mexborough School got to live out their rock ‘n’ roll fantasies – when they played alongside a real rock star during a recent school musical!
More than 100 pupils took part in the We Will Rock You show, which featured a 12-piece band... with Saxon founder Graham Oliver on lead guitar!
They hammered out Queen songs for more than two hours for the singing and dancing extravaganza, which has become a West End hit.
Graham, whose band had a string of hit records in the 80s, is a former pupil at the school and was more than happy to offer his services.
He said: “It was really great; the band was fantastic and the kids put on an amazing show.
“I have a lot of connectios with the school, my three grandaughters go there and in the early days of Saxon, we actually used to rehearse at the school.
“So, it was good to go back there, and I was glad they asked me to take part. It was good fun.”
Graham was so impressed with the show that he intends to travel down to the West End in London to see Ben Elton’s full production.
The show is set in a future where musical creativity is banned, and a lone dreamer sets out to bring rock ‘n’ roll back to life.
Pupils from Year 7, up to the Sixth Form, acted out the many different acting roles, and performed numerous dance routines.
Mexborough school spokeswoman Emma Maltravers said: “It was a fantastic show, everyone said how much fun they had doing it.
“The dance routines, the acting and the band were all great.
“Graham’s been an absolute dream to work with, and has really helped to inspire the band and kids.
“We’re hoping to do some workshops and a fundraising gig with him.”
