Empty places need action

Parents have been warned that the council can’t sustain the thousands of unfilled school places.

“We just can’t go on wasting money on places at schools that people don’t want to go to,” mayor Peter Davies told members of his cabinet.

He said it was no longer possible for local authorities to compel parents to send their children to one school or another. “If people don’t want to send their children to a particular school we can’t force them,” he said. “This is a problem that has to be addressed.

“I warn everyone in Doncaster that this situation can’t go on, and has to be addressed,” he said.
