Don't throw it '“ reuse and recycle old school uniform
Now the school summer holidays are upon us, North Lincolshire Council is reminding people that clothes and textiles including school uniforms can be donated or sold for reuse.
If you have any clothes or textiles that are in good condition but you no longer need or use them don’t just throw them away.
Items that aren’t suitable to be passed onto someone else can be recycled at the kerbside, please place your textiles in the red scheme bag or alternatively in a carrier bag that is clearly marked for North Lincolnshire Council. NLC cannot accept textiles presented in other charity bags.
Leave your bag out for collection at the kerbside with your boxes and you will receive a replacement. See below for items that can and cannot be recycled in the textile bag.
Clothing in any condition
Shoes (tied and bagged in pairs)
The textiles collected through the kerbside scheme help disadvantaged people in the UK by providing clothes for those most in need.
Some of the textiles collected are also exported abroad, mainly to developing countries and Eastern Europe.
Councillor Neil Poole, cabinet member for commercial, said: “During the school summer holidays parents often start to buy new uniform for next year and get rid of old. Old and unwanted clothes can be recycled or reused by others, they shouldn’t just be thrown away.
“By recycling clothes and textiles you could be helping people in this country and others who may not be able to afford new clothing. Throwing anything in the general waste should always be a last resort as the majority of the time there is a more environmentally friendly option.
“If you are unsure on what can and cannot be recycled, check out our website for details.”
If you have items of clothing and textiles that are just in need of repair, visit the Love Your Clothes website, www.loveyourclothes.org.uk/care-repair, for helpful tips to enable you to alter or repair clothes and give them a second life. A quick stitch here and there could give an item of clothing a new look. Ask family or friends to help – someone is certain to be nifty with a needle and thread.
Lots of shops offer repair services, look on your high street or search online.
