Doncaster set for homes and jobs boost as major projects are given the green light

Doncaster is on track for millions of pounds worth of investment, after plans to fund the prestigious HS2 rail college and to free up land for the Hatfield Link Road were given the green light.

At a cabinet meeting this morning, the latest stages in development for the two schemes, which will both bring thousands of new jobs to the town, were voted through.

Members approved the allocation of £1.1million for the capital pre-construction costs for the development of the National College for High Speed Rail.

They also voted through the allocation of an additional £150,000 from the Revenue Contributions to Capital Programme reserve for the additional costs associated with the development of the college.

Speaking at the meeting, Doncaster council chief executive Jo Miller said she welcomed the proposals.

“This is going to be the first manifestation of HS2 in terms of what it will bring to the country, so that in itself is going to be quite significant.

“Moving forward, the construction of the building itself will be a real, living, breathing lesson to our young people at the school.”

The college, which will be one of two National College for High Speed Rail sites, is due to open in September 2017.

And for the Hatfield Link Road scheme, cabinet members approved plans for an order to acquire the required land needed to proceed with the scheme.

Over £14million has been allocated to the DN7 link from Junction 5 of the M18 to Hatfield. This will support a proposed carbon capture power facility, potential low carbon business parks and open up new housing and employment land.

It is hoped that through the construction of the new link road, which was initially agreed in 2013 as part of the Sheffield City Region Investment Fund, over 7,000 new jobs will be created and 3,100 new houses will be built.

In addition, the dualling of the A630 West Moor Link between junction 4 of the M18 to A18 Thorne Road and between the A18 and A630 Wheatley Hall Road is set to benefit from over £9m of Growth Deal funds.
