Doncaster Rovers: Give the fans a decent send-off, demands Ferguson

The least you can do is give the fans a decent send-off.

That is the essence of the message Darren Ferguson has given his players ahead of tomorrow’s final game of the season at home to high-flying Burton Albion (12.30pm).

The Sky-televised clash will see Rovers’ relegation to League Two mathematically confirmed, while Burton need a point to seal promotion to the Championship.

Ferguson has continually heaped praise on the club’s fans during a difficult season for them - and he says tomorrow is a chance for his players to show their gratitude for the support they have been given.

“It’s been a difficult few days and it has probably sunk in now about us being relegated,” Ferguson said.

“I spoke to the players on Tuesday morning about making sure we put on a good performance for the fans in the last game.

“It’s really important that we have a really good, high-tempo performance and get a result to send them home a little bit happier.

“I would have to say that the only ones that have played their part this season are the fans,” he added.

“Everyone else has failed.

“We have to admit that we’ve let our fans down by being relegated and we have to change that quickly.

“We don’t want to let them down on Sunday, in a game that’s on the television.

“I’m picking a team to win the game and make sure we get a good performance for the supporters, because they’ve suffered.

“And, professionally, I want to see a performance that shows we want to take a bit of momentum into next season.”

Richard Chaplow is in contention for a return to the starting line-up after recovering from a hamstring problem. Mitchell Lund has also been passed fit.

Young strikers Will Longbottom and Joe Pugh are also set to be included in the matchday squad.
