Doncaster Rovers: Ferguson - I can name any XI I want

Darren Ferguson says no player at Doncaster Rovers can have any argument with the side he names at Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night.

Ferguson will take charge of his first game after being unveiled as Rovers' new boss and says he is in a position to name any starting XI he wishes following Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Bradford City.

"I could pick any team I want," Ferguson said. "The position we're in, I could pick any 11 players and I don't think anyone could really knock my door down.

"There were some good positive performances on Saturday, I'm not saying there weren't/

"Richie [Wellens] was good on and off the ball.

"It's a bit like a blank canvas and I want to tweak various things I saw on Saturday.

"I've got to go off on what I've seen in the first time seeing them live. There's areas and specific things I look for that might need tweaking."

Ferguson has hinted that some players who have played regularly in recent weeks could be given a rest on Tuesday in order to get them right 'mentally.'

He said: "There's certain players sometimes you look at and think they might need a mental break, it's just not working for them.

"That doesn't mean they're not in my thoughts.

"It just means for that given day I'm just thinking, come out for a minute, have a look at it, chill a bit mentally in particular and we'll have a look again.

"That's important for players."

Opponents Shrewsbury have played a variety of different formations during the first few months of this season.

And versatility is something Ferguson wants Rovers to show in the weeks to come.

He said: "Shrewsbury have played all different formations 4-2-4, 4-4-2, every formation you could imagine.

"The last home game against Colchester they changed to a diamond and won 4-0.

"They played a diamond again Saturday against Scunthorpe, were winning and lost.

"So they may go the diamond and if we decide to go with the diamond it's man for man in midfield and that suits me fine.

"We're going to work on a couple of different formations which I can change within the game with the personnel I select rather than having to make substitutions.

"It's key we do that."
