A disastrous Easter weekend left Rovers four points from safety with seven games to go, while the two sides immediately above them in the table – Oldham Athletic and Fleetwood Town – both hold games in hand.

While admitting he thinks his side will need four wins and a draw from their remaining seven games, Ferguson says Rovers can only concentrate on each game as it comes.

“I said not long ago we felt 50 points and that would be four wins and a draw,” he said. “Four wins would probably do it but you never know.

“All we’re concentrating on is trying to shorten the gap between us and those above us as quick as we can really. That’s the only way we can look at it.

“I spoke with the players and made it clear they have to focus on each game as it comes.

“It’s an old cliché but it simply is the case.

“You hope that one win gets you up and running again and you have to get that soon.

“But it is a case of really having a clear focus on each game individually.”

Rovers have taken just one point from their last 12 matches.

They head to Rochdale tomorrow looking for their first win since January 3 with time running out to save their League One status.

Ferguson is expecting a tough test from Keith Hill’s side who have won six of their last eight games.

“It’s always a tough game there but we’ve got to make sure we expose them in terms of getting control of the game,” the Rovers boss said.

“We did that a lot better against Blackpool, controlling the ball and possession.

“We’ve got to be brave and we’ve got to compete because they’ve got a really mobile midfield.”
