Doncaster road collision 'nothing to do with boy racers' says eyewitness lorry driver

On Saturday night, South Yorkshire Police were forced to disperse drivers from a ‘car meet’ at The Range car park in York Road.

Police said officers had dealt with a collision caused by young motorists ‘driving around like fools.’

But now a lorry driver who witnessed the smash has said the incident was not caused by any of the group – and that many of the young car enthusiasts had actually come to the aid of those involved.

Mark Davies 49, was first on the scene of the crash at around 7pm on Saturday night, which he says involved a collision between an elderly woman in a sports utlity vehicle and a van containing a young couple with a baby.

He said: “I was right behind the accident, saw exactly what happened – it was nothing to do with all those young lads like the police have said.

"They were actually helping me out. They were helping with those in the vehicles and were directing traffic around the scene.

"I’d have been totally lost without them.”

Mr Davies, from Thurnscoe, said he spent an hour at the scene. It is understood none of those involved were seriously injured.

He added: “Don’t get me wrong, these boy racers can be little scrotes at times, but you couldn’t fault them. They were brilliant.”

Yesterday, South Yorkshire Police blasted the gathering, writing: "Not satisfied with just looking at each others cars they've decided they would drive around like fools and cause havoc causing a collision and a shop which was still open to close early due to the car park being used by them anti-socially.

“South Yorkshire Police will not tolerate this sort of behaviour and where possible the strongest action will be taken against offending drivers. Whether you're an enthusiast or not we all have a responsibility to be safe on the roads.

“If you think that South Yorkshire is the place to come and meet to behave like this then it's time to think again.”
