Doncaster RLFC: Thornton thrilled to pass Barrow test
Doncaster RLFC will set their sights on the first of three successive away games against Hunslet Hawks on Sunday at tonight's training session at Cantley Park.
“It’s going to be a testing period for us and that is why it was important that we beat Barrow at the Keepmoat,” said head coach Gary Thornton.
“We’ve only lost once in the league at the Keepmoat and although it’s still very early in the season the plan is to make it a fortress and I was absolutely delighted to beat Barrow – especially having had (prop) Connor Scott sent-off after 26 minutes.
“They are a very good team and I thought they tested us at times in the middle of the field. They are a big physical team and they took some handling.
“I think that it was as tough a test as we’ll have all season at home but we defended our line well throughout and showed our character in the second half.
“We knew it was going to be tough being a man down - Connor apologised to the players at half time - and that we had to get a good start and try and get some points on the board in the first ten minutes or so.
“We did that with two early tries and although there was an element of luck for the second from Jordan Howden’s kick, no one can say we didn’t deserve it for a change.”
It was the stand-off’s first competitive game of the season following a lengthy injury lay-off.
“Jordan looked a bit rusty at times and there is more to come, but it was good to have him finally out there,” said Thornton.
