A LEADING Yorkshire sporting venue has secured a 180 for darts in Doncaster, after bringing a major competition to the town.

Doncaster Racecourse has announced that it will play host to the Doncaster Match Play Darts Tournament in October this year, a major event arranged in partnership with MW Entertainments that will feature some of the sport’s leading players.

Held on Monday, October 1, the contest will see current world PDC Champion Adrian Lewis take on players including Wayne Mardle who previously reached fifth in the World Rankings; Tony O’Shea, who was seeded at the 2012 BDO World Championship; and Martin Adams, who is BDO world ranked number one and three-time winner of both the BDO World Championships and three-time World Masters champion.

Also in the line-up is Kevin Painter, ‘The Artist’, who famously finished runner up to darts legend Phil Taylor in the 2004 PDC World Championship final, a match now widely credited as one of the greatest in the history of the game. Painter will be a tough competitor having won the Players Championship Finals in 2011.

Mark Spincer, managing director of Doncaster Racecourse, said the tournament was one that he expected to prove extremely popular given the loss of the PDC Players Championship Finals, a contest that has – until this year – been held at the Dome.

Mr Spincer said: “We’re extremely excited to be hosting the Match Play Darts Tournament. Darts, like horse racing, is a really engaging sport and one that attracts a huge following, and the fact that Doncaster lost out earlier this year on the PDC Players Championship Finals was a real blow to fans.

“To be bringing darts back to Doncaster and attracting such a strong line up of players is fantastic, and we’re sure it will be a really well-attended event.”

The tournament, sponsored by Evans Halshaw Citroen Doncaster, will be held in the Lazarus Exhibition Hall at Doncaster’s Town Moor course on Monday, October 1 2012. Gates open at 6pm, with the tournament getting underway at 7.45pm.

One novice will have the chance to take part in the tournament, testing their skills against the players on the day by entering a wild card raffle draw. Each ticket costs £5 and will be drawn on Saturday, September 15 during the racecourse’s St Leger meeting, with a donation from every £5 ticket bought, helping to raise money for Help for Heroes.
