The children, pupils from Ridgewood School were given a unique opportunity earlier this month to work with and produce two concerts with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

The concerts, which were performed in front of more than 2,000 young people, were held at The Dome.

Supported by internationally renowned music leader, Tim Steiner the concert challenged preconceptions about classical music and orchestras at every opportunity with performances of classic, film and game music.

The young producers from Ridgewood selected the music played, were involved in technical aspects of the performance and took the lead on promoting the event with local schools.

Coun Nuala Fennelly, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Schools, praised the youngsters who took part in the evet.

She said: “These concerts were fantastic.

“It is great to see so many young people getting enthused and involved in the production of classical music.

“The young people who took part in this project were at the forefront of producing these shows.

They took charge of everything from the actual music to front of house duties.

They showed real leadership and organisational skills.

“I spoke to many young people at the concerts and they said they were inspired by what they had seen and were now considering learning to play a musical instrument. Well done to them all.”

This project was delivered by Orchestras Live with local partners and funded by Arts Council England and Doncaster Music Education Hub.

Over two years, there will be 42 concerts performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in six culturally under-served locations, reaching nearly 20,000 people.
