Doncaster people with dementia enjoy a seaside day trip

A group of people living with dementia and their carers enjoyed a free trip to the coast this week thanks to Doncaster charity DonMentia.

The trip, which was arranged by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) Carer Governor and DonMentia founder Eileen Harrington, saw 28 people travel from Doncaster to Cleethorpes by train for a great day out, enjoying the sights and sounds of the seaside, along with a traditional fish and chip lunch on the seafront at The Punch Bowl Restaurant.

Eileen who is also Chair of the Doncaster Dementia Forum said: “I’m delighted so many people came to Cleethorpes with us.

“Caring for a loved one with dementia is a full time commitment, and the thought of arranging a day out can be a dauntg prospect alone, but travelling in a group means there’s lots of extra support.

“Going on a day trip is a wonderful way to remember happy times, and visiting places with interesting things to do and see can bring great pleasure and enjoyment to everyone, regardless of their age or medical condition.”

The group enjoyed the extra support of Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Amanda Cooper of British Transport Police (BTP), who safely escorted them throughout their day, as part of BTP’s ongoing commitment to helping people with dementia to feel more comfortable about travelling on the railway.
