Huge late night ‘explosions’ in Doncaster sparked a Twitter and Facebook frenzy.

Scores of social media users took to the internet in a bid to find out what was responsible for a series of loud bangs heard across the town last night.

People from as far as afield as Edenthorpe, Sprotbrough, Armthorpe, Scawsby and Clay Lane reported hearing the “massive” noises at around 9.30pm.

Rumours began to surface of explosions, collapsed mine works, demolition work and even a riot at Doncaster prison - with one concerned local calling police to find out the cause of the noise.

Matt Buckley wrote on Twitter: “So, reports of hearing 5 explosions in Doncaster last night, heard in Barnby Dun, Sprotbrough and Intake. As of yet, no explanation...”

While Jamie Roberts tweeted: “What’s going on in #doncaster tonight? Hearing stuff about explosions heard across the borough?”

But the answer proved to be rather less exciting - fireworks being let off in a garden on Balby Road.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed that they had not dealt with the incident.
