The victim’s partner, who wishes to remain anonymous, says the altercation occurred when the 33-year-old asked residents in a house to turn their music down.

The incident occurred at a house in Sheardown Street, Hexthorpe at about 11.35pm on Saturday, September 17.

She said: “The music had been blasting all evening, and because he had to get up in the early hours for work the next day he went round to ask them if they could turn it down.”

It is alleged he was then assaulted.

She added: “He went to hospital to have his head glued because of where they were kicking him.

“He was released but then his injuries led to an infection, and he’s now had to have surgery to bring the swelling on his head down and have shunts fitted.

“We don’t know when he will be able to leave hospital. We don’t want the children to be scared about who they’re living next door to so we’ve had to tell them that daddy fell over.”

The man’s partner, with whom he shares three young children, says there has been antisocial behaviour.

She says problems have been reported to both South Yorkshire Police and Doncaster Council ‘numerous times’ over the last few months - but says both agencies have failed to act.

“Things have got that bad that I knew it would end up in something like this.

“I’ve kept saying time and time again go through the official channels and report it to the council and the police because I’ve been scared about what would happen.

“You phone the police and they say this is a council issue, and the council just say the same and you just get pushed from pillar to post.

“Something needs to be done about the problems in Hexthorpe.

“A lot of the landlords on our street let overcrowding happen, and that’s what selective licensing is supposed to stop.

“They have the tools, but they don’t use them.”

A selective licensing scheme was introduced in Hexthorpe in November 2014.

As part of its conditions, landlords in the area are required to take appropriate action to address community issues over tenancy management and particularly around anti-social behaviour problems.

No-one from Doncaster Council was available for comment at The Star went to press.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “A 33-year-old man suffered facial injuries during the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged. “
