Barnsley Council is reminding people who have not completed their annual canvass form to return it as soon as possible.

Around 72 per cent of the 107,122 households in the borough have responded so far, but that still leaves around 30,000 forms still to be returned.

Councillor Jim Andrews, deputy council leader, said: “Getting on the Electoral Register isn’t just about being able to vote. If your name doesn’t appear on there, it can lead to problems obtaining a mortgage, loans, and even a mobile phone.

“Being on the register is proof that you are who say you are and live where you say you live, and as such is one of the key sources companies use as a reference.”

The council is reminding residents that you are required by law to complete and return the register of electors form, even if you are not eligible to vote in the UK.

Any resident who has not received a form is asked to request a replacement from the council on 01226 773070.

The revised register will be used for the European Parliamentary Election on Thursday, May 22, and for all elections held this year.
