Two men are to go on trial over the killing of an 81-year-old Rotherham pensioner early next year.

Mushin Ahmed was assaulted in an area close to Fitzwilliam Road in Rotherham in the early hours of the morning on Monday, August 10 this year, and died in hospital from his injuries later that month.

Damien Hunt, 29, of Doncaster Road, Rotherham, and Dale Jones, 29, of East Bawtry Road, Rotherham, have both been charged with his murder.

It was confirmed at a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court yesterday that a trial has been scheduled to take place in February.

It will start on February 8 and is scheduled to last for around 10 days, taking place at Sheffield Crown Court.

Lawyers for the two defendants separately indicated their clients are likely to plead not guilty, with a formal plea hearing due to take place in December.

When Hunt and Jones were charged with murder in September, police issued a statement on behalf of Mr Ahmed’s family.

Detective Inspector Victoria Short, the officer in charge of the investigation, said: “The family of Mr Ahmed continue to ask for privacy from the media and would like to pass on their gratitude for the support they have received from the local community and beyond.”

The defendants remain on remand ahead of the next hearing.
