A pioneering Dearne school is set to use solar power as part of an eco-friendly scheme.
Swinton Fitzwilliam Primary School will have solar panels up and working later this month thanks to £50, 000 funding from Sheffield Renewables.
It is believed the school will be on of the first in the Dearne Valley to be supplied by solar power and is part of Friends of the Earth’s Run on Sun campaign.
Nobody from the school was available for comment this week but Dearne MP John Healey said he hoped other schools will follow suit as they could save thousands of pounds a year.
Mt Healey commented: “This is a fantastic initiative and I’m proud we are leading the way in the Dearne with schools run on sun.
“A school could save up to £8,000 a year by going solar, at the same time as reducing carbon emissions and helping children learn about clean energy,” he added.
