A Sheffield man has been arrested in Sheffield over suspected terrorism offences linked to Italy.
The 52-year-old was arrested at a property in the city yesterday in a raid led by Italian authorities.
He was one of four men arrested across the UK in a pre-planned operation.
A 38-year-old man was arrested in Hull, a 32-year-old man was arrested in Derby and a 33-year-old man was arrested in Birmingham.
A spokesman for the North East Counter Terrorism Unit in Leeds, which had officers involved in the raid in Sheffield, said: “Officers from North East Counter Terrorism Unit and West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit arrested a number of people across the UK assisted by officers from Humberside, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and West Midlands as part of an ongoing operation led by authorities in Italy.
“The arrests have taken place in connection with this operation under European Arrest Warrants.
“The four men will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court as part of the process.
“We understand that people may be concerned following the arrests however we would like to reassure communities that today’s activity is as a result of an ongoing investigation which is intelligence led.
“There is no evidence to suggest that communities are at risk.”
