A PENSIONER was killed and another was seriously injured when the broken down car they were in collided with a lorry in Doncaster.

The collision happened today on the A635 Barnsley Road in Marr, when a silver Mercedes large goods vehicle crashed into the back of a green Toyota Avensis in which two 72-year-old women were sitting.

The impact of the collision forced the Toyota to overturn. The lorry then hit a tree before stopping.

The Toyota driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while her passenger was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary with slight cuts to her face, police said. She was treated for her injuries and released.

Both women were from Barnsley. The dead woman has not yet been named.

Officers arrested the lorry driver, a 38-year-old man from Barnsley, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision, which happened 500 yards east of the junction with Red Hill Lane at about 11.10am to come forward.
