Detectives are appealing for help after a Doncaster pensioner was assaulted when he tried to stop a break-in at an off-licence during the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The 65-year-old man heard noises coming from an alleyway at the side of his property on Warmsworth Road, Balby, around 12.20am on January 1 and went to investigate.

When he reached the alleyway he saw two males apparently trying to burgle the shop. He tried to intervene, but the males struck him in the face and ran off towards the town centre.

The man suffered a fractured cheekbone and concussion and was taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary, where he remains.

One of the males is described as 5ft 4ins tall, with black hair and a broad face. The other was slightly taller – around 5ft 5ins – and thinner.

Anyone with information about the assault should contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident number 42 of January 1, 2013.
