Pupils with red hair at a Rotherham school have been injured by fellow pupils during an unofficial ‘kick a ginger day.’
The assaults, that are thought to have emanated from the cartoon South Park – took place at the Wingfield Academy in Rotherham.
Parents at the school of 850 pupils have launched a Facebook group to highlight the issue, and have posted pictures of their children’s bruises.
The father of one 13-year-old girl said his daughter had come home with bruised legs after being singled out by other pupils because of her hair colour.
He said: “I think it’s disgusting. It’s very upsetting for my daughter. If I went in to school and kicked a child then I would be arrested.”
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The force was made aware of incidents at Wingfield Academy, Rotherham and – following national guidelines – the school took the lead and dealt with the matter.
A senior staff spokesperson at the academy said the pupils responsible for the attacks had been ‘strongly reprimanded’.
