Arsonists cause £75, 000 damage at Goldthorpe flat block

Arsonists are believed to have started a blaze at an apartment block which caused £75, 000 worth of damage.

Police said offenders forced entry through a shutter door in the underground car park below the flats on Barnsley Road, Goldthorpe, on Saturday, October 4, at about 11.30am.

A force spokeswoman said: “There were two cars parked in the car park and a fire was started in one of the vehicles and the shutter door then closed.

“The fire service were alerted and attended at around midnight.

“A number of residents were evacuated and have had to be homed until the property can be made safe.

“Both cars were destroyed in the fire and there has been an estimated cost of £75,000 to repair the damage caused to the building.”

No arrests had been made at the time of going to press and police are still hunting the offenders.
