Charity match for Doncaster crash victim Ethan Hedley
A match held in memory of a rising football star killed in a horrific car crash has raised over £3,500 to help towards his funeral costs.
The charity match was organised in memory of 19-year-old Ethan Hedley by Dunscroft United – the club he played for from the age of six.
The memorial match attracted a sell-out crowd at the Hatfield Main ground including Ethan’s heartbroken mum, Kerry.
Ethan, who had recently started playing football semi-professionally for Buxton FC, died after the Vauxhall Corsa he was travelling in collided with a Ford Mondeo in Hatfield Lane, Armthorpe, on April 15.
Speaking about the charity match, Dunscroft United assistant manager Steve Gill said: “The match was really good. The ground was full – I’ve never seen it like that before. It was a brilliant turnout for Ethan.
“We raised £3,500 plus there is more money still coming in.
“Ethan’s mum would like to thank everyone so much for their support – it means a lot to her at this difficult time.”
All money raised at the event will go towards helping to pay for Ethan’s funeral.
Mr Gill said: “We wanted to raise money to help Ethan’s family with funeral costs.
“He was such a big part of the team and so well known in the community. He was always smiling and even people who met him once felt like they knew him.
“Football has always been his passion since he joined us at the age of six and for this to happen at a time when he had just recently started playing semi-professionally for Buxton FC is devastating.”
The match was such a success that staff at the club are hosting another charity game at Hatfield Main tomorrow night.
During the match the team wore their new kit featuring Ethan’s name above each player’s number.
Mr Gill added: “This way Ethan will be with us every time we play.”
At the start of the game the team presented a bouquet of flowers and a number eight balloon – Ethan’s shirt number – to his mum.
A date for the inquest into Ethan’s death has been set for September 26.
Two other passengers travelling in the Corsa were injured in the accident.
An 18-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries and a 19-year-old man suffered minor injuries.
The drivers of both cars were uninjured.
n Anyone who witnessed the crash should contact police on 101.
