Charity boss launches campaign

THE figurehead who founded Meningitis UK after losing his baby boy to the deadly disease will launch a 10-day awareness drive in the Dearne Valley this week.

Steve Dayman, whose 14-month-old son Spencer died of meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia in 1982, will bring the charity’s giant awareness trailer to Morrisons at Dearne Valley Parkway, Wombwell.

Mr Dayman, who received the MBE for his relentless dedication to meningitis awareness, will launch the week-and-a-half campaign from tomorrow, Friday.

He hopes to spread awareness of the disease and ask people to keep an eye out for the symptoms.

Symptoms include a stiff neck, fever, being unable to carry your weight, dislike of bright lights and a pink pin-prick rash that remains when pressure is applied.

Mr Dayman said: “The trailer tour is a massive part of our campaign to spread awareness of the deadly disease.

“There will be a chance to pick up free information leaflets and symptoms cards.

“Our main focus is to fund vaccine research to wipe out all forms of meningitis.

“But until that day we believe spreading awareness is the difference between life and death.

“I hope people will come down and learn a bit more about meningitis.”

Meningitis UK’s giant trailer will be parked outside the store to highlight the disease’s symptoms and the need to act quickly, carrying the hard-hitting warning that meningitis can kill in under four hours.

Although successful vaccines exist to protect against some forms of meningitis, there is still no vaccine to protect against all strains.
