A West End star is to play Sheffield MP Nick Clegg in a new Channel 4 drama based on the 2010 election.

The deputy prime minister is to be played by Bertie Carvel, who has won an Olivier award for his portrayal of Miss Trunchbull in the critically-acclaimed Matilda musical.

Mr Clegg, who appeared on Channel 4’s comedy chat show The Last Leg on Friday night, will be a central character in the new political drama ‘The Coalition’, which producers say will show the Liberal Democrat leader’s ‘rise from rank outsider to the man who would decide the fate of the country’.

The programme also stars Mark Dexter in the role of David Cameron and Ian Grieve as Gordon Brown.

It also features Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss as Peter Mandelson and is written by playwright James Graham whose political play This House, set at the end of James Callaghan’s Labour government, was a hit at the National Theatre.

The 90-minute drama is due to be shown in May. It follows in the footsteps of other award-winning political dramas on the channel including Mo - a biopic of Mo Mowlam starring Julie Walters - and The Deal which starred Michael Sheen and David Morrissey as Tony Blair and Mr Brown.
