A new initiative has been launched at Dearne Valley College to tackle the growing problem of youth unemployment.
On Friday John Healey MP officially opened Dearne Valley College’s (DVC) new Job Zone initiative.
Based at the Manvers Campus, the new service in conjunction with Job Centre Plus (JCP) is primarily available to DVC students to find out about progression opportunities, part-time work and Apprenticeships.
Students can also get help with general careers advice, CV workshops, job searches, access to the Internet, placements, support with registering on National Apprenticeship vacancy website, access to local JCP vacancies and assistance with benefit calculations.
The initiative is for existing students and local people who can be signposted from JCP to access support with a variety of aspects of getting into work.
Kaye Jackson, Business Development Manager, said: “The Job Zone will showcase local employment opportunities and Apprenticeship vacancies plus information on work experience and volunteering placements. Working closely with JCP we will support individuals to develop their skills to appeal to local employers. The initiative also supports the Get Britain Working Initiative”.
Each year Dearne Valley College welcomes over 4000 individuals from across the South Yorkshire region to study either full or part-time; these individuals, in addition to, can now access the ‘Job Zone’, which will run regular sessions on CV writing, job searching, interview techniques and careers advice.
Local employers are also welcome to use the facility to promote their vacancies.
John Healey added:
“Compared to the rest of the country, in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham we have twice as many young people who have been out of work for more than a year, and in parts of the Dearne that number has tripled in the last 12 months.
“So the Jobs Zone will be an important and, I am sure, well-used service which will give DVC students the best possible chance of finding work after their studies.”
The facility will be open from 11.30am until 2.30pm Monday – Friday at the Manvers Campus.
