St George’s Bridge in Doncaster is to re-open to traffic in both directions on Sunday – a week ahead of schedule.

The announcement comes after months of traffic chaos, during which drivers have reported major delays and workmen have been abused and attacked by disgruntled motorists.

The works have included worn-out bridge joints being replaced with modern joints with an extended lifespan, drainage works, carriageway resurfacing and junction improvements, and will be completed earlier than predicted subject to there being no late weather problems.

Peter Dale, council director of regeneration, said: “We have been pulling out all the stops to complete these essential works and I am delighted this has paid dividends, with the bridge set to reopen earlier than originally planned and well in time for Doncaster’s 10-day St Leger Festival Week which runs from September 4 to 13.

“This work on St George’s Bridge has been vital for our road network.

“It will provide road users with a much better travel experience and ensure future maintenance needs are minimised.

“I would like to thank road users for bearing with us.”

To complete the works, the outbound route over St George’s Bridge will be closed tomorrow between 11pm and 6am to remove concrete barriers and change the markings so traffic can start using the correct carriageway again when heading out of town.

Works will then continue through Friday and into the night to lay anti-skid material and paint new lines to prepare the inbound carriageway to be re-opened.

During the early hours of Sunday, road markings will be done, then the bridge will be re-opened for traffic in both directions.

Once St George’s Bridge is fully re-opened, North Bridge Road will be closed to all traffic – except for access to Marsh Gate, North Bridge or businesses – for up to six days to reinstate lines, signs and surface dress the road.
