A Dearne business woman, who set up a manufacturing firm during the double-dip recession, has scooped a top award.

Lynne Darwin, who is sales director at Building Product Solutions, was crowned the business person of the year at the prestigious Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards.

The Goldthorpe woman, who became the first woman to claim the accolade, said: “It was a huge honour to even be shortlisted.

“The calibre of finalists was exceptional and to be recognised amongst such a talented group was in itself wonderful.”

Her company, which is based at Goldthorpe Industrial Estate in Commercial Road, manufactures quality windows exclusively for the new build market.

The firm achieved a turnover of more than £2 million in the year up to May 2014 – trebling its turnover in just five years of trading.

It now has £7.5 million worth of jobs on its books after winning long-term contracts to supply major housing developers such as Taylor Wimpey, Gleeson, Persimmon and Redrow Homes.

Judges praised the window manufacturer highly and said: “Lynne’s award entry demonstrated all-round excellence against the criteria.

“Starting a business during a double dip recession to create a £2.4 million turnover business is impressive and shows real guts.

“Lynne has expanded the production of the business to ensure growth and greater control and shows real staff values.

“Coming from a modest start, Lynne has come a long way and has a lot to be proud of.”

Building Product Solutions, was also shortlisted in the manufacturer of the year category.

The Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber Business Awards, sponsored by Solar Europa, is seen as a highlight of the business calendar in the region.

This year’s event, which was held at the Barnsley Metrodome at the end of October, was hosted by former World Cup Final referee and Rotherham man Howard Webb.
