Concern over plans to close Rotherham and Worksop courts

Objections have been raised at plans to close Rotherham’s courts.

The Magistrates’, County and Family courts have all been earmarked for closure along with Worksop Magistrates’ Court.

If plans go ahead County Court hearings and tribunals in Chesterfield will be held at Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court.

In Doncaster, County Court hearings will be held at Doncaster Magistrates’ Court and tribunals will be held at Doncaster Crown Court.

GMB, the union for staff managing the estate for courts and tribunals, objects to proposed closures.

Stuart Harrison, a GMB organiser, said “The government proposals to close 91 courts and tribunals will not only affect GMB members but front of house staff, security, custody staff and escort drivers.

“GMB members at GEO Amey for example are very concerned for their jobs, some with young families.

“GMB are in the process of visiting these courts to talk to members about the affect these changes will have, as far as we’re concerned no consultations have yet taken place or arrangement put in place.”

The Government has announced that 91 courts could close.
