BUSINESS MONTHLY: Prestigious title goes back into 17th century

New Master Cutler Carig McKay
New Master Cutler Carig McKay

The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire yesterday installed a youthful new Master, Craig McKay.

The annual event, at the Cutlers’ Hall on Church Street in Sheffield city centre, was attended by several hundred Freemen and Friends. It was followed by a procession of top-hatted members to Sheffield Cathedral for a service, before lunch back at the hall.

At the age of 45, Mr McKay is one of the youngest masters in the organisation’s long history.

But its records are incomplete. The Company can say with certainty that installation in the Cutlers’ Hall followed by a church service, started in 1625 with the second Master Cutler, and has continued since then. But what it doesn’t know is how the very first, Robert Sorby, was elected the year before.

The company was established by a Parliamentary Act of Incorporation in 1624.
