A Doncaster firm’s workforce is set to more than double in a £4.5 million investment project in a borough jobs blackspot.

Cable drum manufacturer Askern UK Ltd has also secured a £1 million grant from European funding to help create or safeguard almost 175 jobs in a new factory.

It is the culmination of a six year development plan for Askern UK to expand its business off High Street, Askern.

The firm specialises in wood and cardboard packaging for the electronics and telecommunications industry.

It has been trading in Doncaster for around 75 years.

The new factory, which received planning permission in 2011, will create 92 jobs - and a further 82 existing jobs will safeguarded.

The scheme is backed by a £1 million grant from the Regional Growth Fund.

Lynda Morton, financial director of Askern UK Ltd, said: “We are thrilled to announce a successful bid for a £1 million grant from the Regional Growth Fund for this new factory.

“The grant, together with support from HSBC, will enable us to realise our ambition to construct a state-of-the-art carbon-neutral factory.

“A biomass boiler will be installed to generate heating with the possibility of setting up a local district supply. Our waste management programme will be extended to produce fuel from wood waste.

“Innovative new machinery and processes will be instrumental in helping us to secure much larger export contracts against global competition.”

“We feel it will bring a big boost to an area of high unemployment and thank Doncaster Council’s Business Doncaster section for its assistance, help and guidance.”

When planning permission was granted, she said the extra processes which could be carried out would further boost Askern UK’s export potential and the new factory would enable them to be more competitive and regain their former position as Europe’s leading cable drum manufacturer.

Elected mayor Ros Jones, a former councillor for the Askern ward, said: “This is brilliant news for Doncaster. I welcome Askern UK’s continued investment in their business, which is a great boost to the local area.
