BREAKING: Doncaster woman dies after 'hit and run' in 'stolen car'
A woman has died after she was hit by a 'stolen car' which failed to stop at the scene in Doncaster
A stolen 'grey or silver' BMW hit a 62-year-old woman on Station Road in Stainforth close to the Asda store at around 12.55pm this afternoon.
The car was believed to have being watched by undercover officers in an unmarked car before the collision occurred although a spokesman said they were 'not actively pursuing' the BMW.
The woman, named locally as Sue, was airlifted to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield but sadly died a short time later.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The BMW is believed to have been stolen and officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or seen a similar vehicle in the area to please come forward.
"The BMW, thought to have been displaying a registration plate with the prefix HV07, is believed to have collided with a parked vehicle on Station Road, before the collision with the pedestrian.
"Prior to both collisions, the BMW was seen leaving the Asda car park on Station Road, close to where officers in an unmarked police car were patrolling.
"The police vehicle was not actively pursuing the BMW when the collisions occurred, however the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission due to the earlier involvement of officers from South Yorkshire Police.
"Anyone who saw the collision or may have seen the BMW since is asked to call 101 and quote incident number 841 of 11 March."
The road has now reopened.
