A SELFLESS volunteer who regularly gives up his spare time to drive cancer patients to hospital forfeited his birthday celebrations to ensure residents made it to their appointments.
Geoff Piper of Highfield Crescent, Thorne, has been driving the Firefly Express bus that transports patients free of charge to their hospital appointments for the past 18 months and was more than happy to spend his 40th birthday transporting patients.
Mr Piper said: “It’s like a party bus, I make sure we have music for the passengers to sing-a-long and we have such a good laugh. My main aim is to try and create a fun atmosphere to help take their minds of their illness.”
Denise Dunn, Firefly founder, said: “He is dedicated and committed to his role and nothing is too much trouble, often stepping in at the last minute when cover is needed.
“The patients adore him and he has the knack of creating an enjoyable and happy atmosphere, going that extra mile to ensure patients have a stress free time.”
