Bid to free empty homes

HOUSING bosses are appealing for more private sector landlords to help reduce the number of empty properties across Doncaster.

Officials at Doncaster Council want to commission more people in the private sector to buy and refurbish empty properties to bring them back into use as affordable housing.

Potential investors are being invited to meet with officers on Friday September 30, at the Mansion House, from 10am until 12.30pm.

The authority is offering help including financial assistance packages to help return long term empty homes in priority areas to use. Access will be provided to over 14,000 potential tenants on its housing waiting list, and a management agent service through St Leger Homes which can include a rent collection service, tenancy checks and information packs.

Coun Ray Mullis, cabinet member for housing, said: “We want to hear from landlords who would be interested in working with us to bring empty properties back into use for social rent. This event will be an opportunity for the public and private sectors to explore opportunities to reduce the numbers of empty homes and maximise the housing choice for local people.”

The private sector housing scheme is up and running. Last month the first tenants to sign up for one of the private sector homes involved in the scheme moved in.
