The 26-year-old forward netted his eighth goal of the season in the second half last Saturday.

And the Reds looked destined to end their run of four games without a win, before that streak continued thanks to Tom Lawrence’s late, late equaliser.

“It felt like a loss, to be honest, but that’s football. If there’s one goal in it then anything can happen, and we got punished.

“We were the better team but we didn’t kill the game off when we had the chance .

Barnsley, who travel to Norwich City on Saturday, were hoping to produce a late-season surge towards the play-offs.

However, their recent run of form looks to have put paid to that idea, with 11 points now separating them from the top six.

Watkins feels the play-offs are a step too far now, saying: “It’s difficult. We’d have to win every game. That’s not impossible, but it is very hard.

“We still want to aim for the top eight or as close to the play-offs as possible.”
