Michael Dugher, MP for Barnsley East, has welcomed news that Leeds General Infirmary will retain its Children’s Heart Unit as part of a new review into cardiology services.
The review found that services at Leeds would meet new standards for children’s heart services and its future would be safeguarded.
Mr Dugher, also a Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Heart Disease, has campaigned with the Leeds Save Our Surgery campaign to retain these vital services in Leeds, which mean that children with complex heart conditions in Barnsley and the surrounding areas are able to access a dedicated unit within travelling distance.
Mr Dugher said: “It is welcome news that the future of Children’s Heart Services in Leeds has been safeguarded. When these vital services were under threat of closure, I campaigned hard for services to continue at the excellent facility at Leeds General Infirmary. My thanks to all who campaigned.”
