Teenagers Elvis Otim and Tai-Reece Chisholm signed one-year deals at Oakwell following successful trials at the end of last season.

Central midfielder Otim, aged 19, played at Nottingham Forest, while Chisholm, 18, joined the club after missing out on a professional deal at Birmingham City.

Otim, who can also play on either wing or at right-back, said: “I’m really happy about the opportunity I have here at Barnsley and the faith they’ve shown in me. I am ready to show the faith back.”

Chisholm said: “I am very honoured and proud to be part of the club.

“I think I’ve worked very hard to get to this point. Obviously, it was unfortunate that I didn’t get a pro contract at my old club but to bounce back and come here, I think I deserve it.”

Jordan Barnett, 18, was the other new signing to pen a one-year deal with the Reds.

The versatile player was scouted from the Barnsley Sports Academy and Penistone Church by Burnley, but has returned to his home town after being released.

Barnett, a midfielder or left-back, said: “Barnsley stepped in and offered me a professional contact straight away so I’m really happy.”

Simpson’s professional deal comes after two years in the under-18s and he will link up with the U-23s under former Red Martin Devaney next season.

Louis Wardle, Romal Palmer and Will Smith, all 19, have signed one-year extensions. Wardle and Smith are products of the Oakwell academy. Palmer joining the ranks in 2016 after being released by Manchester City.
