Balloon release for roof repairs

ONE quarter of the total needed to repair the roof at Misterton’s All Saints Church has now been raised.

The community has been galvanised after eight lead thefts in as many years left church volunteers looking to find £33,000 for repairs ahead of the coming winter.

Thanks to fundraising events and the generosity of local residents the appeal fund now stands at an impressive £8,410.

The latest event was the ‘Great Misterton Balloon Release’ which took place last Saturday. Over 260 people paid £1 to tie a special message or greeting to individual balloons and these were then released from a huge net. The sale of greeting cards, refreshments, raffle tickets and roof appeal mugs helped boost the coffers further with £341 raised. County Councillor Liz Yates also donated £400 from her discretional grant fund.

Volunteer fundraiser Jane Moffett described it as a “very special day”, adding: “It was wonderful to see so many people over the course of the day and we want to sincerely thank everyone who sent messages, baked cakes, gave their time and generally boosted us with their empathy and encouragement.

“Special thanks must go to Stacey Brumby of Absolutely Fabulous Balloons as we couldn’t have staged the event without her.”

More events are lined up with a prize bingo session planned for Friday, November 18. This will be held in the Church Rooms on Church Lane, 7pm start, and refreshments will be served.

The church will also host A ‘Songs from the Shows’ concert on Saturday, November 26, with West End star Sally Hartley.

Tickets cost £7 for adults and £5 concessions. Doors open 7pm for a 7.30pm start and refreshments will be sold during the interval.

And on Wednesday, November 30, there will be a Christmas shopping night at the Dovecote Cafe from 3.30pm to 8pm. This will feature craft stalls, donkeys, a hamper raffle and children from Misterton Primary School will sing carols.
