Young people in the Isle of Axholme are set to be rewarded for their involvement in a range of activities in their community through ‘The Young Mayor’s New Year Award’.
North Lincolnshire Council is introducing the new award for young people aged between 11 and 14 years old.
It is designed to encourage youngsters to get involved in fun and challenging activities in their communities, and reward them for making positive use of their free time.
Alex Noakes, young mayor of North Lincolnshire, will act as a role model and offer support to those taking part.
Councillor Rob Waltham, cabinet member for people, said: “We recognised that there was a gap for young people under 14 years old which is why we wanted to create a programme that would mirror the Duke of Edinburgh Award for this age group.
“Once young children are engaged in activities of a positive nature that they are being rewarded for and can see what they are achieving it will encourage them to want to continue and progress further. “This Award is a fantastic way of getting them prepared for moving onto the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
“It is also a fun and worthwhile way for young people to learn something new.”
Young people will be able to get involved in the programme from the week starting January 6 2014.
It can be completed at any Youth Pursuits sessions in North Lincolnshire.
