A1 closed near Doncaster after bridge ‘plunge’

The A1 has been closed in both directions near Doncaster tonight following reports of a person jumping from a bridge.

Both the southbound and northbound carriageways have been shut by police between junctions 37 and 38 between Red House and the Marr turn off at the A635 Barnsley Road.

Several motorists have taken to Facebook and Twitter to say that a person had been spotted on the bridge near the Markham Grange shortly before the road was closed off.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the person has jumped onto the carriageway.

Long Lands Lane between Ridge Balk Lane and Doncaster Road are also blocked while there are delays on the A630 Warmsworth Road.

A Facebook poster under the name of Stacey Taylor had earlier shared a message which read: “PLEASE SHARE THIS STATUS THIS IS VERY URGENT!!!

“There is a man/woman attempting to jump off the motorway bridge at Markham Grange.”

“The police are there and the motorway is completely shut off. If you know anyone local that isn’t in a very happy place or if someone has just had an argument then please check they are okay.”
