Social visits to the gym led to a new career for graduate Hannah Shaw, and involvement in a recent world- breaking sports record in London.
Twenty-seven year old Hannah, of Rossington, was one of 350 fitness enthusiasts who took part in the biggest boxercise class recorded, for 30 minutes, in London’s York Hall.
She joined the event with nine of the women she coaches in boxercise, as a reward for their hard work in weekly sessions.
Hannah, who has just graduated from Sheffield Hallam with a first class degree in nutrition, explained: “I became interested in boxercise because it’s that bit different.
“It’s a fantastic way of keeping fit as it works all the muscle groups, and you can do it inside or out in the sunshine, to make the most of the weather.
“I pick our venues from week to week and we might be in a Doncaster community hall, or out in one of the parks, or at Lakeside.
“The world record attempt - that we smashed incidentally - was organised by Andy Wake, the founder and owner of Boxercise Ltd.
“I trained with him and was invited to take part. We went down there and got involved in what was an over all amazing experience.
“Anthony Joshua was there and the atmosphere was terrific.”
“Im a huge fan of boxercise. It’s basically using boxing style techniques with gloves and pads.
“It uses mobility, speed, agility, is a cardio work-out and the list goes on.
“I interject a few burpees and press ups for variety, and people come to try it on their own then find they make friends within the group.”
Hannah grew up in Intake and attended Danum School.
She said: “I had little interest in sport at that time.
“My favourite subject was art and design, and I did a couple of months at university in Huddersfield but decided ultimately that it wasn’t for me.
“So I came home, took a part-time job in fashion retail, then became a supervisor and a sales team leader at Meadowhall.
“I moved on from there in to the food trade, imports and exports, and because I wanted to get in shape and feel fitter, started going to the gym.
“It was as much to meet friends who went there too, but I fell in love with fitness, healthy eating and nutrition.
“In September, 2015, I went back to university and have just graduated.
“I completed a distance course to pass level two fitness and level three in personal training.
“We need to tackle the childhood obesity issue and get young people in to fitness. “Boxercise is a good tool because parents and children can do it together at home.
“One of the problems behind weight gain is that people don’t often understand the calorie content of foods and portion control.
“Advertising doesn’t help, and people having such busy lives. Fast food is used for convenience.
“There should be more emphasis on nutrition in schools. If young people really understand how to eat well on a budget, cooking with fresh food, it would have a big impact. It’s hard for busy families, so it has to become a way of life.”
The food festivals that are popular events all over the country are not geared towards children, added Hannah, and need to work on interesting more youngsters in cooking.
“It’s very much about mental health too,” she said. “The foods we eat have a major effect on our mental health and most people are unaware .”
Hannah’s next ambitions are to qualify to teach boxercise to children, and to teach yoga.
“I joined in an international event in the Dome that involved a body of people performing a sun salutation, a 12-stage move. Yoga is another wonderful way to keep mind and body fit and supple,”
The yoga event was in celebration of the fourth International Yoga Day in June, when the Dome hosted the 108 Sun Salutations challenge. Its repetition of movements aimed to bring stillness and peace to the mind, through the connection with the body and breath. It was also seen as a memorable way to mark the end of spring and the arrival of summer.
Hannah has a facebook group under her name, Hannahroseshaw, and intends to build on her skills to pass on her knowledge in the dietary and exercise field as much as she can.
“It’s extremely important to keep fit, whatever your age and situation,” she said. “Find an exercise you enjoy then build it in to your life.
“I love to see people build confidence along with their fitness. Teaching boxercise is very rewarding. I don’t get much time for other hobbies but I’m doing what I like to do anyway, and I love to get out with my dog, a Springer spaniel crossed with miniature poodle. He’s called Alfie.”
