A Doncaster chippy is aiming to be named Britain’s number one – after landing a spot in the 20 best takeaways in Britain.

The Auckley Friery in Doncaster is one of four Yorkshire-based fish and chip shops which have all been named in the Top 20 Takeaway of the Year in the National Fish and Chip Awards.

The 20 finalists were selected following an extensive judging process of the top 40 fish and chip takeaways, which were announced last month.

The winner will be announced at The National Fish and Chip Awards, hosted by The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), on the 28th of February 2023 at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge.

Commenting on the news, Andrew Crook, President at the NFFF, comments “We received such a high standard of applications this year, for this category in particular, making it a very difficult yet rewarding judging process.

"The top 20 really demonstrate a strong commitment to the fish and chip industry and to the British public, so we’re thrilled to see so many shortlisted from across the country.

In order to place on the coveted list, takeaways needed a benchmark score of 96 per cent or over of the 100 marks up for grabs.

The threshold for restaurants was 95 per cent or higher, according to Fry Magazine, which runs the awards.

Reece Head, competition organiser, said: 'We're so pleased to announce this year's winners.

'The awards recognise and celebrate the hard work, passion and dedication that these operators put into running their businesses.”
