A family pub for a summer drink

If you are looking for a good pub off the beaten track for both a quiet drink and somewhere to take the family with plenty to do for the kids look no further than the George and Dragon on Church Street, Mexborough.

It’s a family pub, which has been run by for the past two years by couple Ian and Nicola Crofts and their sons Josh 22, and Ben 18.

Nicola said: “The George and Dragon is a community pub and of course we have our regulars, but we always welcome new faces.

“Everyone who comes likes the traditional feel of the place. It is a very friendly pub”.

Nicola and Ian are justifiably proud of the extensive beer garden, which has a free bouncy castle and trampoline, so there is plenty to keep children occupied.

The pub is a popular venue for birthday parties, christenings and funeral receptions and there is a free function room for meetings.

The lounge is decorated with photographs of old Mexborough and a fascinating collection of old whisky jugs, which are suspended from the ceiling.

There is a popular quiz night on Thursday, cash prize bingo on Monday, pool, darts and live TV football.

The George and dragon is the couple’s first pub .

Nicola, a former nursing assistant and Ian, a former self-employed window cleaner, moved to the area from Skegness.

She added: “We are a tied pub but our prices are very competitive.” Beers include John Smiths, Carling, Fosters, Coors light, bottled cider and Hobgoblin for real ale fans.

Reduced prices on offer include John Smiths bitter at £2.20 a pint and lagers at £2.50. Her own favourite tipple is Coors light and the occasional vodka and slimline tonic.

The pub is pet friendly and here we see Nicola and Ian pictured with their cats Tramp and Fudge, and dog George.
