Businesses rally round  to stage free mock prom for students in Askern

School leavers in 2020 at the school were left disappointed after being told their leavers prom would not go ahead.

But determined not to let them miss out on the chance to celebrate their achievements, parents and local businesses have organised an alternative event.

The mock prom is to be held at Alexander House across the road from the cafe in Askern on July 24 and the whole of the school leavers year 2020 has been invited.

The idea was the brainchild of Joanne Moon who owns the Lakeside Cafe at Askern.

Joanne said: “They were in lockdown so they never got to have a prom- they had it cancelled three times and rearranged.

"Loads of pupils had already bought their outfits so they were really fed up

"Campsmount were going to amalgamate two together this year but because of restrictions they can’t ”

Joanne said she came up with the idea to “cheer everyone up”.

"I offered to do the catering, then went and asked the council if we could have the room for free and it just started from there.

“We’ve got food for free, flowers for free, some of the cards free.

“We’ve had loads of donations and parents got together to do the decorations.”

Generous traders taking part include The Flower Shop florist at Askern, Wains Butchers, John Rowley at Getting the Spirit, staff at Teasdales Bakery and Special Occasions card shop and photographer Derek Collins.

The organisers are asking people with vintage vehicles to bring them to the event for photo opportunities.

“At the moment we just have three, so with there being so many young people and trying to get the photos done within an hour, the more we have the better, said Joanne.

“All that year is invited – we’ve only got 60 tickets in case covid restrictions aren’t lifted. If restrictions are lifted we have another 40 tickets to take it to 100.”

The mock prom will be held from 7-11pm at Alexander House and people are meeting for photos in White Wings car park between 5-7pm around Askern Lake.
