Academy students in Doncaster have their sights set on prestigious university

Twenty of De Warenne Academy’s brightest Year 11 students embarked on an exciting and eye opening adventure to the University of Cambridge, experiencing life in ‘student digs’, as well as exploring some of the most historic and beautiful colleges in the country.

They also took part in lectures on evolution and cross cultural literature, delivered by world class university lecturers. Before they left there was time for a competitive game of bowling against students visiting from Darton Academy and a walk around the historic city centre to do a spot of shopping.

Principal, Anna Rooney, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to get an idea of what life is really like at such a prestigious university.

“We have incredibly high aspirations for these students and look forward to supporting them this year to secure outstanding GCSE results.”

The aim of the trip was to promote links between the third best university in the world and the schools most able students, providing them with a clear path to making a future application at the university and encouraging them to work towards the highest academic achievement.

At another Doncaster school, pupil Chloe Hadley has secured the help of a menagerie of rescue animals and a circus skills expert for a fundraising event. All 350 pupils at Doncaster’s Travis St Lawrence C of E Primary will be taking part in a Green Day later this month to boost the Children’s Air Ambulance.
