Dance group in action at Sandtoft museum

They have been performing the piece for more than a year but developed it further since visiting the museum in May to be trained as conductors.

Their appearance was sponsored by the British Trolleybus Society and was part of European Trolleybus Day.

The performance Sit Back is about four London Transport trolleybus clippies. It is set in 1942 and the appearance at Sandtoft was unique as they arrived for their performance on board a 1938 London trolleybus which operated throughout the war.

British Trolleybus Society chairman Dave Chick said: “After issuing tickets to the crowds we saw them at work, counting passengers and asking them to move down the bus, and dealing with a dewirement (when the poles become detached from the electric cables overhead).

“They then have their break and dance to the latest sounds on the BBC, they’re excited to have jam in their sandwiches, and they read letters from their boyfriends in the armed forces. We hear the voices of the writers. And not all the news is good.

“The break ends, the dancers go back to work, and then they boarded a trolleybus and left to warm applause from the crowds. We had a good crowd of visitors and many wanted to grab photos of the dancers with the trolleybus after they had finished performing.

The group’s performances created a lot of excitement at the Museum for visitors and for the volunteers. While the dancers were performing a second London trolleybus was driven round the museum’s circuit and Museum member Bob Ashton strolled round dressed as an air raid warden, all adding to the atmosphere.”
