The final session of the current series of live jazz concerts presented by Jazz into Doncaster at the Conservative Club is scheduled for Thursday June 28, is fully expected to close the season on a cheery note thanks to the zestful foot tapping sounds of 20’s, 30’s styled outfit The Brideshead Ballroom Stompers, led by Leeds College of Music graduate free-lance trombonist Matt Ball.
Regular patrons of the Con Club gigs will certainly recall Matt’s first appearance at the venue as a key member of Sheffield based band Steel City Bones which featured an impressive mighty five trombone frontline no less though on this occasion the mood will be in startling contrast, harking back to earlier periods with the band regaling the audience with such good time numbers as Happy Feet, Cheek to Cheek, Nice work if you can get it, Varsity Drag, Hello Dolly, The music goes round and around, and Have you met Miss Jones, Tiger Rag, Ain’t she sweet and many more such gems.
Originally named The Ballroom Stompers, the word Brideshead was added to the title after the band was chosen to feature in the 2008 movie adaptation of Brideshead Revisited, starring in the famed ballroom scene, filmed at Castle Howard drawing the most favourable comment “You guys are great, you really took the part and sound brilliant” from Brideshead Production Co Ltd. to see just how ‘great’ this fine band of musicians really are, make sure to be at the Con Club on the night to enjoy a truly memorable and happy evening of swingin’ hot jazz. The session gets under way at 8.30pm, admission £6 at the door, £1 supplement, due to extra size of the band, but worth every penny.
The new season kicks off again on Thursday September 13, get the date in your diaries now, with a special concert featuring star jazz trombonist Roy Williams along with Jon Taylor reeds, Roy Norton trumpet, and The Nicola Farnon Quartet.
