CAKES were on the menu – naturally – at Dearne Valley College, when local author Meryl White launched a new baking book... based on recipes written by her grandmother more than 30 years ago!

Meryl, originally from Bolton-upon-Dearne, collected recipes written on scraps of paper and in old exercise books by her grandmother Lizzie Abson, who died in 1977.

She created a booklet of recipes in 1982, and a recent revival of interest in baking prompted her to look again at her Grandma’s .

A re-launch of the book took place at the college’s Griffin Restaurant in Wath-upon-Dearne on Friday, June 10 – with guests served with baked buns to mark the occasion.

Meryl, who regularly bakes many of the recipes for her family and friends, said: “Putting Grandma Abson’s Traditional Baking book together has been a real labour of love.

“I love baking and, better still, my family and friends love eating what I bake.

“I am delighted that Dearne Valley College were able to host Grandma Abson’s book launch, so close to where she lived and worked.

“The event was a splendid celebration of traditional baking.”

Meryl’s recipe book will be available from YPD Books at www.ypdbooks.com priced £10.99 per copy.
