MORE than 1,000 people are supporting a campaign launched by a Doncaster man to save the country’s pubs and clubs from closure.
Shaun Whitaker, a committee member at Intake Social Club, created the Facebook group ‘Save our Working Mens Clubs and the Entertainment Industry’ in response to a wave of pub closures both locally and across the UK.
Around 1,200 people have supported the internet campaign, which was only launched in mid-January.
Shaun said: “While we feel the Government are dragging their heels, pubs and clubs, the heart of communities, will continue to close daily.
“We fear that the longer it takes the more livelihoods of many will be lost.
“Communities depend on these venues for socialisation. We don’t want to lose communities too.”
Shaun added that an online petition has been signed by nearly 300 people and he will soon be lobbying politicians to take action to save the trade.
On the camapign group website, he said: “The closures of pub and clubs around the UKk is having a severe detrimental effect on the community and the lives of the people in the entertainment business.
“When I feel we’ve got enough to start shouting, I will be posting to breweries, local MPs, radio stations, and whereever else I get the opportunity to.”
